Enrichment

We at Olive High ensure our pupils are given the opportunity to develop and learn through creativity in all areas of the curriculum rather than just through the delivery of a scheme of work.

Each curriculum area are expected to develop enrichment activities for learners

Enrichment within curriculum areas should be aimed at:

  • Increasing enjoyment within that curriculum area
  • Developing independent learning and challenging in gifted and talented students in the curriculum area
  • Developing the profile of the curriculum area or particular skills and themes within that area

Each curriculum area will develop their enrichment activity in the coming academic year.  Enrichment will include:

  • Development of clubs linked to one or more curriculum areas
  • Development of faculty-based trips and outdoor learning opportunities
  • Inviting external facilitators to further engage pupils with particular activities
  • Celebrating a particular ‘National Day’ or ‘World Week’ such as ‘Science week’ related to an issue of relevance to the curriculum area

The enrichment activities will be delivered through various activities and at different times:

  • Lessons to celebrate a particular ‘National Day’ or ‘World Week’ related to an issue of relevance to the curriculum area
  • After school clubs
  • Through half termly Enrichment days
  • Assemblies

Enrichment at our school may include:

  • Poetry, Drama or Book Clubs
  • Celebration of ‘World Book Day’ or ‘Poetry Week’ etc
  • Faculty trips to venues related to the curriculum, such as visiting museums and galleries
  • Multi faith visits
  • Participation in ‘UKMT Maths Challenge’
  • Celebration of National Science and Engineering Week
  • Science Clubs
  • Identifying external facilitators to lead learning on different areas of the curriculum
  • An ‘Art Club’ to prepare material for display across the school buildings
  • Indoor and outdoor sports clubs
  • A ‘Olive High Talent’ day where learners rehearse and exhibit artistic performances on a chosen theme
  • Celebration of ‘World Environment Day’, ‘Fair Trade Day’, ‘International Women’s Day’, ‘Citizenship Day’, Holocaust Memorial Day, St George’s Day and other related events
  • Development of inter-faith forums
  • Faculty trips to museums
  • Whole school ‘Sports Days’

This Enrichment day was organised around promoting the fundamental British values on respect, tolerance and cultural diversity in a multi-faith modern Britain. Our pupils visited many ‘places of worship’ giving them access to others faiths and beliefs and helping them to understand the lives of others.

 

Year 7 & 8 visit to the Burnley United Reform Church.

The Minister at the Church was very engaging and kept the pupils interested throughout the talk that she delivered. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the visit with the tour of the church and the discussions they had taken part in.

 

On their return from these visits the pupils took part in faith quizzes and devising board games to ‘test their knowledge’.  They enjoyed an informative and wonderful day where they were given the opportunity to learn about other faiths and beliefs.

All year groups engaging in a 1st Aid Training day based around 1st Aid and learning how to perform basic CPR!

 

Olive High worked in partnership with Building Bridges, where we walked through Burnley and the various places of worship. The idea behind the initiative is engage all people from different faiths and create bridges between our faiths, focusing on our shared British Values. 

 

The award winning roadshow ‘BIN IT’ came to Olive High, aiming to raise pupil awareness about the environmental impact of littering and the importance of correct litter disposal of rubbish, especially chewing gum.

Parents and children from the community arrived to our new site on Shorey Bank for an open day and view the school. We had many activities on display, including teaching children how to carry basic CPR!

The activities involved solving problems and getting money (tokens) with which they could purchase treats!

Year 11 enrichment day delivered by the Chartered Insurance Institute; Personal Finance Society on ‘My Future Finances’. The workshops were delivered by Education Champion Patricia Spreull. 

Year groups and topics were as follows:

Yr 9 – My future finances 
  1. Understand the cost of everyday expenses
  2. Consider your personal long term goals 
  3. Evaluate your ability to achieve your goals depending on your income
Yr 10-  Understanding credit and debit
  1. Understand the difference between credit, debit and debt
  2. Be aware of different types of credit and the importance of APR
  3. Understand the difference between good debt and bad debt
  4. Recognise that you have choices each of which have consequences
Yr 11- Moving on from school
  1. Understand the key features of a payslip
  2. Explain the types of income deductions
  3. Calculate gross and net income
  4. Understand how the government uses tax and NI to fund public services

Following on from COP26, we have decided to work towards net zero carbon and becoming an officially recognised Eco-School. Pupils have volunteered to become ambassadors in various areas to help pursue our goal in becoming net zero within 2 years. 

Following the success of the ‘Young Leaders Award’, we have officially started our journey to develop our KS4 pupils further and enrolled pupils onto the Duke of Edinburgh Award. 

We are aiming to attain the Bronze Award by Summer 2022 insha’Allah.

Pupils in year 9, 10 and 11 finally complete the Young Leaders Award and received their certificates! We had a range of awards in all the categories:

  1. Developing Leader
  2. Accomplished Leader
  3. Exemplary Leader

Keeping pupils’ mental wellbeing at the heart of our school, pupils at Olive High visited Blackpool Pleasure Beach in July 2021. This reward was given to the pupils, from the governing body, for their exceptional attitude and hard work throughout the difficult period of the Covid-19 Pandemic. 

We felt our girls really needed this reward and they thoroughly enjoyed their trip!

These workshops were delivered by Mrs Rafiq. Mental health problems are experienced by up to one in four of the population. The workshops and activities focused on coping with stresses of daily life, positive self-esteem and working productively. Pupils found the workshop interesting and engaging, especially after the tough year they had.

As part of the Citizenship curriculum we took our  year 7 pupils to Burnley Combined Courts on the 19th and 21st of November. The aim of the visit was:

  • To inspire our pupils to become confident Muslim females  
  • To enhance their learning experience outside the classroom
  • To give them a clearer insight into how the Judicial system works in the United Kingdom

Pupils had the opportunity to:

  • View the inside of a courtroom
  • Role play different scenarios in court
  • Understand the different roles of various people involved in a real court case
  • Listen to a brief about the National Justice Museum
  • Be aware of crimes and their consequences / punishments
  • Attend a workshop on Hate Crime

As part of our History curriculum, we had a trip to visit Leeds Royal Armouries. This was a tremendous opportunity for our pupils to learn and gain experience “first hand”. The trip to the museum was linked into the following areas of our curriculum for both year 7 and 8:

  1. History – The English Civil War (Royalists & Rebels 1642-51)

We had the pleasure of inviting the ‘Wellybobs Roadshow’ to Olive High. Pupil’s discussed the importance of animal rights and welfare, part of the Citizenship curriculum. 

Olive High pupils had the incredible opportunity to go Live on Heritage Radio in Manchester. Our pupils spoke very confidently and eloquently about the school and the importance of Education in today’s society. 

Our pupils had a once in a lifetime opportunity where we visited local Burnley MP Julie Copper at the Parliament in London. The visit provided an amazing experience for our girls and were welcomed to both chambers in Parliament (House of Commons and House of Lords). 

Our pupils visited Manchester Runaway Park where they had workshops on life at the Airport and what it takes to be a Hostess or Pilot. 

Our pupils visited Manchester Museum of Science & Industry where they had a private workshop on the ‘Robots’ exhibition. 

The trip to the museum linked into the following areas of our curriculum:

  1. Science – 2 private activities at the Manchester museum (Experiment & Revolution Manchester)
  2. Computing – a private ‘Robots’ exhibition
